It is with great sadness that IOF announces the death of Dr. Sergio Ragi-Eis MD CCD CDT on February 22, 2012. His passing, an immense loss to his family, friends and colleagues, also leaves a great gap in the field of osteoporosis as a whole. Sergio will be remembered not only as a valued friend and colleague, but also as a uniquely dynamic researcher, educator and advocate in Brazil and Latin America. His work has been of great importance in helping to advance health professional education and in furthering international relations within the field. In 2011 Sergio was elected by IOF member societies in Latin America to represent the region as a Board Member of the International Osteoporosis Foundation for the 2012-2016 term. He will be greatly missed by his many colleagues within the IOF family.
Dr. Sergio Ragi-Eis was the medical director and principal investigator of the Osteoporosis Diagnosis and Research Center of Espirito Santo (CEDOES), since its foundation in 1990. His practice has been dedicated to osteoporosis evaluation, DXA assessment, medical consultation on bone metabolic diseases and clinical research. A particular research interest was in DXA applications for health sciences and osteoporosis treatments.
Sergio received his medical degree and completed post graduate studies in orthopedics in Rio de Janeiro. He was a founding member of the International Relations Committee of ISCD and in 1993 helped to found the Brazilian Society of Clinical Densitometry, SBDens (newly ABrASSO), of which he was president in 1995 and 2007. He was also a founding member of the Latin American Society for Clinical Densitometry (SOLAD, as of 2004 the ISCD Iberian American Committee) and served as its president from 2001-2003.
Among his many accomplishments as a researcher, author and editor, Sergio also developed the well-recognized process of Professional Certification for DXA practice in Brazil. As a consequence, Brazil is one of the few countries where certification is a requirement for the practice of bone densitometry. In 1996 he developed the Brazilian Site Accreditation Programme for Densitometry Centers (PROQuaD), a programme run by SBDens with more than 500 accredited centers.
As a very active participant in several national and international societies Sergio was highly respected for his work internationally. He was a current member of ISCD, SIBOMM, SOBEMOM, SBOT, SOBRAO, ASBMR, among others. From 1999 to 2001 he served on the Osteoporosis Task Force of the World Health Organization. He also served as member of the Board of Directors of ISCD for 6 years, was active on several ISCD committees and was awarded the ‘Physician of the Year’ by the ISCD in 2000 and the John Bilezikian Global Leadership Award of the ISCD in 2008. He has organized scientific national and international meetings and courses, including, among others, the Brazilian Congress on Densitometry, Osteoporosis and Osteometabolism (BRADOO). Sergio was instrumental in a new joint project of the IOF-ISCD to provide worldwide training and certification – and in a short time he helped to make this a reality in Latin America.
